TM-B: Seeing Deeper, Volume 4

Welcome back to TM-B: Seeing Deeper. Or should we say in this installment, TM-B: USB-Cing Deeper.

Questionable jokes aside, this is an exciting week. An electrifying week. A powerful week. For this is the week we talk all about the TM-B battery, including how it stacks up with typical ebike batteries, what we designed it to accomplish, and why we think you’ll love it.

Now, let’s not waste another moment and charge ahead.

Leveling up the battery experience.

Let’s start by acknowledging a very simple truth: The battery is the most expensive component on just about any ebike. It’s dense. It’s demanding. And up until now, it only did one thing: power the bike.

Now don’t get us wrong, powering the bike is the battery’s number one job, and the TM-B does this job exceptionally well, which we’ll expand on below. But since we were creating our own battery system from scratch, we had to ask ourselves: why can't it do more?

That’s why we designed the TM-B battery to also function as a standalone power bank. Equipped with two USB-C ports, it doesn’t just power the bike, it powers your devices. One port is 240W bi-directional, meaning you can charge the TM-B battery from the wall using our charger, or flip the flow and charge a MacBook at super fast speeds. The second USB-C port delivers 65W output, which is perfect for everyday items like phones and cameras, as well as specialized gadgets like drone batteries.

The real life result? You can take the TM-B out on a bikepacking trip and use the battery to charge your phone or headlamp away from civilization. Or if it’s a weekday, you can ride to the beach and charge your laptop while working from the great outdoors. A powerful experience, no matter the trip.

Future-proofing with USB-C.

Not to brag too much, but the TM-B is the first ebike in North America to adopt the new 240W USB-C PD standard to charge its battery. That’s a lot of numbers and letters, so let’s break down what this actually means for the charging experience—today and tomorrow

By building on a universal standard that the broader tech world is already adopting, we’ve designed the TM-B charging experience to be simpler, faster, and far less dependent on proprietary bricks and odd cables. This also means you can charge the bike with nearly any USB-C cable and brick. Because the future isn’t a mess of mystery adapters—it’s powerful, it’s universal, and it’s something we’re actively leading with the TM-B battery.

Let’s talk range.

Battery range is one of the most important topics concerning EV owners and curiosos, and for good reason. The thought of feeling stranded isn’t exactly comforting, is it? Meanwhile, the idea of waiting to charge doesn’t inspire spontaneity.

The TM-B battery pack comes in two sizes depending on which model you choose: a standard size for the TM-B, and a larger pack for the TM-B Performance. The 538 Wh standard pack delivers up to 60 miles of range, while the 808 Wh large pack stretches that to up to 100 miles.

That’s enough range for your commute plus your favorite detours. Errands plus adventure. The long way home because the weather’s nice and you want to stop at your favorite taco truck.

And when it’s time to recharge? Go from 0 to 80% in under 3 hours for the standard battery size, and under 4 hours for the large battery pack. Translation: more riding, less waiting.

TM-B battery cells: It’s what’s inside that counts…

Inside the TM-B battery are the same exact cells used in the Rivian R1T and R1S—just fewer of them. This is an important distinction because the world, historically, has not treated ebikes like the small EVs they actually are. Since our ultimate goal is for the TM-B to be reliable enough to replace short car trips, we need to hold it to the same standards as cars, and that means designing the battery with Rivian-grade components. This may not be the reigning philosophy in the ebike industry (yet), but we firmly believe it to be the winning one.

…But looks still matter.

Sure, removable batteries are common in ebikes. But most of them live quiet and unsightly lives when they’re not on the bike. With the TM-B, we chose a fundamentally different approach.

Instead of treating the battery as pure utility void of any joy, we actually considered aesthetics and user experience in our design process (shocking, we know). The result is an object that you’re actually excited to interact with, proud to carry and place on your desk, and something that draws attention for good reasons, not bad.

We even obsessed over the battery removal and reinsertion experience. The motion, the feedback, the speed—these are all small but significant moments that our team intentionally designed to feel satisfying. A great example is the battery handle that simply rotates to let you pop it out of the bike and then carry around.

But not just anyone can take out the TM-B battery. We replaced the traditional key-based battery lock with an electronically actuated system. This means no jangling keys to fuss over and no mechanical compromises. Instead, the battery locks and unlocks seamlessly via software, making it easy to secure.

The Portal opens a week from now.
